An Emporia woman was hospitalized and cited after Saturday’s multi-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Industrial Road and Interstate 35, while two other people were hurt and taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment.
Lyon County deputy Tom Hardin says three vehicles were involved when the crash developed at 11:50 am. Hardin says 18-year-old Myriam Montoya was driving a Hyundai Ascent northbound and failed to yield for the red light at the north end of the intersection. Montoya’s car then hit a westbound Lexus LL driven by Texas resident Carrie McNaul, who had gotten off Interstate 35 but was planning to get back onto the highway.
Montoya’s car then hit a GMC Envoy driven by 63-year-old Fidelmar Tovar of Emporia.
Montoya, a passenger in her vehicle and a passenger in Tovar’s SUV were taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health with suspected minor injuries. All involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Montoya received an unspecified citation as part of the investigation.
1:45 pm Saturday: Crash at Industrial Road, I-35 southbound junction sends three people to Newman Regional Health
Three people were taken to Newman Regional Health after several vehicles collided in west Emporia on Saturday.
Lyon County Deputy Fernando Zuniga says the crash began unfolding as a northbound car on Industrial Road was stopped on the north side of the Interstate 35 junction. A southbound car had come off the Interstate, but the driver wanted to get back onto the highway. As the light turned green for the southbound driver, the northbound driver moved forward, hitting the second vehicle — which then pushed into a third vehicle.
Two people in the first vehicle and one in the second were taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health. Injuries are considered to be non-life-threatening.
The medical response and crash investigation closed the southbound ramp from Industrial to I-35 for about 45 minutes. Emporia Fire, Olpe Fire and Lyon County deputies responded. Additional details are pending.
