Emporian Luke Barnwell is on the move.
Barnwell was named as an assistant coach for Grant McCasland at Texas Tech Saturday.
Barnwell spent the last 10 seasons at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita and had a record of 224-39. Barnwell was named the Naismith High School Boys Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2202. He led Sunrise Christian to the 2022 National Interscholastic Basketball Conference Championship.
Barnwell guided Sunrise Christan Elite’s team for the past eight seasons and had a record of 178-28. During that time, Barnwell led Sunrise Christian to five consecutive GEICO Nationals. In 2022, Barnwell’s team was ranked No. 1 through the entire season and won the inaugural NIBC. Barnwell has coached NBA players Kennedy Chandler, Kendall Brown, Gradey Dick, and Ochai Agbaji and helped train Buddy Hield and Ron Baker.
Barnwell played college basketball at Newman University and Emporia State University and started his coaching career as a student assistant at Newman. Prior to attending Emporia State, Barnwell played his senior year of high school at Bishop Carroll. Prior to attending Carroll, Barnwell played at Burlington.
