Emporia Fire handled two small fires Friday, one in the city limits and one close to the city.
The first fire developed around 3:45 pm. Fire Capt. Willie Ward says the fire at Eight and Sylvan started in a mulch pile and was put out quickly. The incident was fireworks-related, the first one for the city this Fourth of July holiday period.
Emporia Fire also responded to Interstate 35 after a small grass fire developed at mile marker 138, or the Road U exit, around 5:30 pm. Ward says less than an acre burned before the fire was put out. The cause is undetermined.
