Saturday night saw an increase of fireworks complaints in Emporia, while Sunday saw the complaint number come down somewhat.
Lyon County Emergency Communications reported 12 complaints Saturday, with almost all concentrated between 10-11:30 pm. Seven complaints were reported Sunday. Emergency Communications had less than five complaints total from Tuesday to Friday.
Sales and discharge hours remain at 10 am-10 pm Sunday before expanding to 10 am-11 pm Monday and Tuesday. The legal sales and discharge period ends Wednesday from 10 am-10 pm.
Emporia’s fireworks ordinance also says no fireworks can be set off within 200 square feet of any hospital, school or nursing home property line. Bottle rockets, metal sparklers or aerials like lanterns are disallowed.
If the city owns the property — as in streets, parks, the Emporia Golf Course, city parking lots or recreational fields, the David Traylor Zoo, Lee Beran Recreation Center or Jones Aquatic Center parking lots — fireworks can’t be discharged from those locations.
Fines can range from $100-$500, as well as having the fireworks confiscated.
