Emporia firefighters investigated a fireworks-related house fire Sunday night and early Monday.
Battalion Chief Tony Fuller says the fire at 1230 West was reported around 11:30 pm, but the situation began unfolding about two hours before the emergency call.
The currently unnamed resident put the fire out with a garden hose. Fuller says this points up the need to have adequate water nearby when shooting fireworks, especially as dry as things currently are areawide with moderate to exceptional drought across the KVOE listening area. He also advised that residents wet down any fireworks landing areas to limit the risk of fires developing or spreading.
This is the second fireworks-related fire in the Emporia city limits since the sales and discharge period began June 27. Fire damaged a mulch pile near Eighth and Sylvan on Friday. Nobody was hurt with either incident.
