Emporia Fire was called out to a small fire north of the Emporia State University campus Tuesday morning.
Fire crews were dispatched to an area north of Interstate 35 around 9 am, finding a small campfire that was burning.
The fire turned out to be about a quarter-mile north of the area where Emporia’s annual fireworks will be set off around dusk Tuesday night. Volunteers had started finalizing the setup for the show, but firefighters say the campfire had no connection to the setup process.
Firefighters remind residents it is dry areawide, with all area counties in some level of drought, so residents need to have extra water available if they are shooting off fireworks Tuesday and again Wednesday before the city’s official discharge period ends Wednesday night.
