At least for now, concerns about slower tax collections haven’t materialized.
In fact, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly says June’s tax collections of almost $1 billion were 1.8 percent above estimates and almost 8 percent above those for June 2022.
Individual income tax collections were $379 million, below expectations by 1.1 percent but almost 4 percent above last June. Corporate collections, $226 million, were over 13 percent above estimates and almost 53 percent above June 2022. Combined retail sales and compensating use tax receipts totaled $304 million, half a percent above estimates and barely below June 2022.
The governor’s stated goal of partnering with lawmakers to get Kansans tax relief during the 2024 session isn’t sitting well with Republicans because the GOP says Kelly vetoed a relief plan during this year’s session. Republicans plan to bring the 2023 package back for discussion next year.
