The Emporia Spartan 16s baseball team didn’t anticipate ending the summer on a low note.
Coming off a sweep over Newton Monday night, the 16s hosted the Capital City Monarchs in a single 9-inning game Tuesday at Soden’s Grove.
After holding a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Monarchs rallied for an 8-4 victory in the season finale for the 16s.
Emporia scored its first three runs on three consecutive bases-loaded walks.
The Monarchs chipped away by scoring at least one run between the third and seventh innings. The Monarchs tied the game at 3 in the fourth and took the lead for good in the fifth.
Emporia added its final run in the seventh.
Coach Brady McAfee said the biggest takeaway from the season was the growth of the team.
Owen Ruge went 3-for-4 at the plate.
Emporia finishes its season with a 10-14 record.
