Investigation results are pending after an apparently low-level oil spill north of Americus this past weekend.
The spill near Roads 300 and D, about eight miles northwest of Americus and five miles southwest of Bushong, was reported to Lyon County Emergency Communications on Sunday, with Lyon County deputies taking a report and sending that information to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Early indications are a crew with Lighthouse Drilling Company of El Dorado was using a pump truck to remove water from a non-flowing waterway when the spill developed. A valve was apparently opened before the pump was primed.
About 50 gallons of oil went into the waterway afterward.
Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell says the company self-reported the incident. Further details are pending, but remediation and mitigation work is ongoing.
