I would have lost this bet, you know the bet about Greg Rahe leaving KVOE. My guess was Greg would be with us until he could no longer turn on his microphone.
Obviously, I was wrong. July 21st is Greg’s last day at KVOE after nearly 36 years.
What I failed to factor in was Greg and Bernie, his wife of nearly the same time frame, love for one another.
This is my conspiracy theory based on some facts and even more on my speculation.
About a year ago, Greg told us that Bernie might need to move to Ellinwood to help care for her mother; if she did, he’d be going with her.
That didn’t materialize, but after about ten months Bernie retired from her long-time position at the hospital and started looking for a job both in Emporia and near Kansas City where their daughter Megan lives.
A month ago Greg let us know they were moving to Lawrence where his wife had taken a new job. He resigned, they sold their house, and history is being made.
Here’s my conspiracy theory kicks in.
It involves Bernie, but I can’t be too upset with her because her actions accomplish what she had hoped for, to have more time with Greg and their family. As long as Greg was with us here at KVOE his home time would be limited because he’s Greg. He knows no other way.
Let’s get one thing straight – slowing Greg Rahe down in performing his job at KVOE doesn’t work. Greg is a workaholic and has zero ability to say NO. If you saw a list of the regular tasks he does besides his sports well…….
Back to my conspiracy. It looks to me like Mrs. Rahe – again maybe not intentionally – figured out the only way to get Greg to spend time with the family was to get him away from KVOE.
Selfish? Hell no! I’d say GREAT MOVE!!
Fortunately for us, Greg’s reputation was so strong we had dozens of
excellent applicants for his position.
Greg doesn’t have a job in Lawrence yet, but he’s not concerned and he should not be. With his skill set, he will have lots of opportunities. In typical Greg Rahe style, he’ll land on his feet, AND, where ever he lands they will be blessed to have him.
Thanks, Greg – it’s been an honor to work alongside you.
