Progress is evident as a pair of street improvement projects continue in Emporia.
For the Highland Street construction zone, City Engineer Jim Ubert says a lot of work is now done.
Ubert says the contractor is on track to have everything done by the time students return to Emporia State for the fall semester next month.
For the geometric improvements at Sixth and Prairie, most of the work is done, and Ubert says a key component to the late-stage work — traffic lights — could finally begin soon.
New signal poles will be erected shortly after they arrive, ending the core of the project. The goal is to have everything done next month. Prior work has included underground utilities, sidewalks, pavement marking and handicapped-accessible ramps.
Separately, Ubert says the work pace is picking up for the city’s annual Street Rehab project. Several zones have been announced:
*Fifth Avenue from Oak to State
*18th from the roundabout to Industrial Road
*Graphic Arts from the roundabout to 22nd
*Potwin from East to Cottonwood
*South Exchange from Logan to Kansas
*South Union from Potwin to Norton
*Wilson from Third to Sixth
Overall work includes street resurfacing, curb and gutter repairs and installation of handicapped-accessible sidewalk ramps. Asphalt milling begins this week, weather permitting, with overlay to follow.
