Emporia High School has a new assistant principal following approval by the USD 253 Board of Education Wednesday night.
As part of the consent agenda portion of their regular meeting, the board approved the appointment of Brent Burns to EHS assistant principal. Burns brings administrative experience from Chase County where he served as the special education coordinator for UD 284 this past school year.
Burns has also served as the assistant principal and athletic director at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School in Lawrence where he also served as a social studies teacher for five years. In a news release from the district, Burns states, “I look forward to building positive relationships within the building and serving as a mentor for our youth as they approach adulthood. I hope to meet families of staff and students within the community whether it be at a Friday night football game or in a local grocery store or restaurant. Together we will be advocates for the students at EHS and make sure it’s a place they feel safe and welcomed.”
EHS Principal Dathan Fischer in the same release states “Mr. Brent Burns will be a great addition to the Emporia High School community and administrative team. His previous leadership experience will be beneficial as he takes on this new role.”
Burns holds a Bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a Master’s degree in building leadership both of which he attained at the University of Kansas. Burns is beginning his new duties immediately and is taking over for former Assistant Principal Trevor Matthews who resigned from his position earlier this month.
