One of the three defendants awaiting resolution as part of the court proceedings surrounding Jesus Avila’s murder may take the next step forward in August.
Alan Alanis will have a plea hearing Aug. 21. As part of a pretrial status hearing Thursday, the decision was made to have the hearing after the Aug. 9 sentencing of alleged gunman Samuel Garcia.
Two other co-defendants, Andrew Granado and Jovan Pecina, also have status hearings Aug. 21. Alanis, Granado and Pecina have been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, conspiracy, arson and other counts in Avila’s death in September 2017.
Garcia will be sentenced after reaching a plea agreement on second-degree murder. Co-defendant Armando Nunez is serving 47 months in prison after pleading no contest last year to attempted burglary of a vehicle with intent to steal a firearm, interference with law enforcement and criminal damage.
