A pair of street resurfacing projects in Emporia will overlap and could end around the same time later this year.
Work has been underway for several weeks as part of the annual Street Rehab project. The asphalt milling and overlay process started last week, with overall work includes street resurfacing, curb and gutter repairs and installation of handicapped-accessible sidewalk ramp. Work zones include:
*Fifth Avenue from Oak to State
*18th from the roundabout to Industrial Road
*Graphic Arts from the roundabout to 22nd
*Potwin from East to Cottonwood
*South Exchange from Logan to Kansas
*South Union from Potwin to Norton
*Wilson from Third to Sixth
Meanwhile, the city is getting ready to launch work as part of the annual CCLIP, or City Connecting Link Improvement Project, involving a funding cost share between the city and the state. Here’s City Engineer Jim Ubert:
CCLIP construction could begin by late August. Both projects could end by late September or early October, weather permitting.
Separately:
*With work ahead to improve water service and reliability, the Peyton Street railroad crossing will close starting Tuesday. Maintenance is the listed reason. The crossing may reopen by late July.
Peyton north of that zone and South Avenue east of it will be part of a major waterline project starting by September. Work will ultimately connect the water towers near Interstate 35 at Topeka Street and near South and Carter, although the project will jump prior waterline work on Peyton between Sixth and South. The waterline project could end in February.
*Work on a downtown Emporia traffic signal is underway after a lightning strike earlier.
City Communications Manager Christine Torrens says the light at Sixth and Constitution is under repair, although this will provide a temporary fix after the cabinet was damaged. Temporary stop signs are at the intersection and the light will remain “on flash” until further notice.
Torrens has said it could take up to six months for permanent repairs to take place.
