Lyon County deputies say an attempted U-turn led to an injury crash near Emporia’s West US Highway 50 roundabout Tuesday afternoon.
The crash was reported to Lyon County Emergency Communications shortly before 2:45 pm. Deputies, Emporia Police officers and Emporia/Lyon County EMS crews found two vehicles had collided with one upside down just west of the roundabout. Deputy Tom Hardin says a blue Chevrolet Equinox made the U-turn to go west on US-50 but hit a gray Equinox traveling eastbound.
The driver of the SUV making the U-turn, 28-year-old Henry Mariche of Dodge City, had three passengers. Two were cleared of injuries by EMS, but Alphons Mariche was taken to Newman Regional Health for suspected non-life-threatening injuries.
Nobody was hurt in the second SUV, driven by 88-year-old Phyllis Talkington of Chase County. It had three passengers as well.
US-50 was reopened less than an hour after the wreck.
4:40 pm Tuesday: One person hurt in two-vehicle collision in far west Emporia
Two vehicles collided on US Highway 50 just west of the roundabout connecting the highway to Interstate 35 and the Kansas Turnpike on Tuesday.
The crash was reported shortly before 3 pm. Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch and Emporia firefighters have confirmed one person was taken to Newman Regional Health with non-life-threatening injuries. As many as four patients were reported during the initial response.
Details on how the crash unfolded are unclear. One vehicle ended up on its top after the collision.
US-50 was at least partially closed for nearly an hour before reopening.

Emergency crews are responding to a two-vehicle injury accident in West Emporia Tuesday afternoon.
Emporia Fire and EMS were called to US Highway 50 and Overlander Road west of the US 50 roundabout at 2:50 pm Tuesday afternoon. Full details are currently pending, however, two vehicles were involved with one ending up on its top.
At least four individuals were involved in the accident, but word on potential injuries and a full crash narrative are currently pending. Westbound traffic is partially blocked and being shifted to the eastbound inside passing lane.
