Area residents are invited to gather at Timmerman Elementary Saturday for a super cause.
Timmerman is holding their Bulldog’s Super 5K for a Super Cause beginning at 3 pm. The super cause is to help support Timmerman first-grader Hunter Samples.
Samples was born with neurofibromatosis, a disease that causes tumors on the skin and along nerve pathways. Last September during an eye exam, Hunter’s doctor noticed swelling along his left optic nerve immediately behind the eye. Following an MRI the next week a small tumor was found, and swelling continued gradually until the decision came earlier this month to begin chemotherapy or risk seeing damage to the eye.
Samples just received his first chemotherapy treatment and will continue those treatments once a month for a year. This is the inaugural year for the Super 5K for a Super Cause and lead organizer Lisa Brittain says they already have plans to continue and expand the event in the future.
The entry fee for the 5K is $10 or $15 if you also purchase a Timmerman Bulldog Super Cape. All proceeds from the 5K will go to benefit the Samples family to aid with travel and secondary medical bills.
Those interested may register the day of the 5K. For entry fees be sure to make all checks payable to Timmerman PTO.
The 5K is part of the Emporia Recreation Commission’s Super Series. The event will begin with registration at 2 pm.
