The David Traylor Zoo has had some new residents recently. The most recent haven’t been born at the zoo, however.
The zoo recently brought in new prairie dogs from the Sedgwick County Zoo. David Traylor Zoo Director Lisa Keith says it’s an animal swap, for lack of a better term.
Keith says the prairie dogs need to be changed out every three to five years to avoid the health effects of inbreeding.
The trade of prairie dogs, which does not include any players to be named later, follows the births of three hedgehog tenrecs last month and the birth of a bison calf in April. Keith says the new arrivals are flourishing.
The zoo has several events coming in August, including the Zoo Brew Night in the Wild event on Aug. 12. A City Meet & Greet with City Manager Trey Cocking is coming from 10 am to noon Aug. 19.
