Softball enthusiasts from the community supported a Council Grove teenager and his family during the third annual Bryan Douglas Memorial Softball Tournament Saturday.
16-year-old Ethan Lif is currently battling osteosarcoma an aggressive form of bone cancer. Lif and his family were chosen as the beneficiaries for this year’s tournament played at the Lorenzo Delgado Softball Complex. Lif says he’s fortunate about the turnout for the event.
Lif is in his first round of chemotherapy and says he’s handling it well.
The tournament began in 2021 in honor of Douglas, a local chiropractor and well-known member of the Flint Hills Optimist Club, who passed away following a battle with cancer. Tournament organizer Sandy Loucks says doing a softball tournament is a wonderful tradition, knowing the Douglas family knew Bryan loved playing the game of softball.
Loucks says teams were able to help other teams out if they didn’t have enough players or the appropriate softballs needed for the tournament.
Along with the softball tournament, a silent auction and a concession stand were put on with the proceeds going to the Lif family. Fundraising totals are pending.
