Cloud cover Wednesday morning only delayed the inevitable as Emporia had its second straight 100-degree day.
Temperatures stayed mostly in the upper 80s through late morning but rapidly increased as clouds thinned. Emporia peaked at 103 degeres with a top heat index reading of 108.
More of the same is now exected into at least Wednesday of next week. Highs should be 100-104 every day in that stretch except for Sunday, when a high of 99 is expected. Heat index readings could peak at 109 for area residents at times over the next week.
Heat advisories continue for all area counties until Thursday evening. Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties remain in a heat advisory through 9 pm Friday.
