The number of available cooling centers within the city of Emporia continues to grow, however, use of those facilities has been sparse to non-existent over the past week.
According to City Communications Manager Christine Torrens there has only been two reported visits since the city announced the establishment of the cooling centers on Monday. Both visits were to the Emporia Police Department lobby on Wednesday according to Torrens.
City Manager Trey Cocking says despite the limited use, the city will continue to offer the centers as shelter to those in need so long as the extreme heat remains in place.
Cocking adds there are a number of factors that could see a rise in need for the centers over the next several days including AC malfunctions and increased stress on the power grid.
Currently, there are six cooling centers within the city of Emporia with the Raise Your Paws lobby — 312 Commercial Street — being added to the list Thursday afternoon. Hours are 8 am to noon Monday through Friday with “friendly leashed dogs welcome” inside of the business and water bottles, water and dog treats available.
A full list of available cooling centers both in and around Emporia can be found here.
