The summertime heat always means high demand for certain nonprofits, including the Emporia Salvation Army.
Unfortunately, this summer’s demand comes with the Salvation Army trying to fill a vital position: case manager. On KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Friday, Capt. Mylie Hadden said interviews are underway to bring a new case manager on board. As that process continues, the Salvation Army has had to adjust its hours.
For now, available hours are 10 am to 3 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 10-1 Tuesdays and Thursdays. Food pantry hours are now 12-3 pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Requests for help with rent and utility payments is high now, with some utility bills as high as $3,000 after residents fall out of payment agreements. Hadden says the Salvation Army has “a few thousand” dollars per month available to help, but it tries to pay around $300 per month and it works with those in need to try keeping them on their payment arrangements.
Other measures of the demand include the free fans as donated this week by Sutherlands, with less than half the 30-fan allotment remaining after the free fans were announced Monday, and the demand for the food pantry. Currently, Hadden says refried beans is a need, as are breakfast items.
