Water main breaks in east Emporia kept the city’s Public Works Department busy Monday.
Shortly after fixing a break on an 8-inch line in the 1000 block of Weaver, another break developed about 50 yards to the north. All told, crews spent close to six hours repairing water main breaks in the 1000 block of Weaver on Monday.
These breaks and another in the 700 block of Weaver, all Monday, mean there have now been eight water main breaks on Weaver Street since Saturday morning, according to Public Works Director Dean Grant.

For the second time in three days, Emporia’s Underground Utilities Department had to repair water main breaks in far east Emporia.
Repair crews began shortly before 4 pm after a water main failed in the 700 block of Weaver. By 6 pm, a second break was reported in the 1000 block of Weaver.
Both breaks were on the 8-inch line that failed twice on Saturday, with one break in the 800 block and one just south of 10th.
Monday’s repairs took about three hours to complete in the 800 block of Weaver. A repair timetable is pending for the 1000 block.
East Emporia has now had five water main breaks since 5:30 am Saturday, with all of them taking place in east Emporia. Issues developed shortly before 6 pm after a 10-inch line failed on East 12th between Mary and Whildin. East 12th was reopened to one lane of traffic late Monday afternoon.

A rough period for underground utilities continues in east Emporia.
A water main break was reported in the 700 block of Weaver around 3:45 pm. The block is closed to thru traffic until further notice. Other details are pending.
This becomes Emporia’s fourth water main break — all in east Emporia — since around 5:30 am Saturday. Public Works Underground Utilities crews had to handle water main failures on East 12th between Mary and Whildin and two on North Weaver — one near 10th, one in the 800 block — on Saturday.
