One Emporia establishment is on board as SOS has revitalized its Safe Bar Program.
Mulready’s Pub is the first local bar to receive the Safe Bar training since SOS joined the Safe Bar Alliance in 2018.
The idea came about when owners Meghann Worthing and Joe Reed took over the bar and felt it was important to continue to provide a welcoming and safe environment for patrons.
SOS Executive Director Connie Cahoone says she’s fortunate Mulready’s has stepped up to become a Safe Bar.
During training, Mulready’s staff were educated on how to recognize the warning signs of predatory behavior, how to intervene in potentially negative situations, when to take action and how to help prevent sexual violence.
Cahoone says SOS has reached out to other local bars to see if they want to become a Safe Bar. Several have already decided they want to be on board. Cahoone isn’t specifying those bars at this time, but she says it’s a good thing to get others involved.
Cahoone says this effort isn’t limited to drinking establishments. Businesses can also get Safe Place training. Bars or local businesses interested in becoming a Safe Place or a Safe Bar can contact SOS at (620) 343-8799 or email info@soskansas.com.
