We’re just a week away from Emporia’s annual friendly competition between local emergency agencies.
The 2023 Battle of the Badges Blood Drive begins next Wednesday, August 9 and will run through Friday at Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church. During a recent installment of KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, American Red Cross Spokesperson Susan Flaer stated there is a critical need for blood at the national level.
She says giving blood is a short amount of time with a tremendous end result.
Once again, local law enforcement, Emporia Fire and EMS and the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center will be taking part in this year’s event with community members having the chance to vote for their favorite agency. LCECC Director Roxanne Van Gundy says they are proud to play a role in the blood drive each year.
Emporia Police Sgt. Dominick Vortherms says it is always a highlight of the year and an opportunity to show residents the “people behind the uniforms.”
Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Manager Jill Cook tells KVOE News they are grateful for any chance to have face-to-face time with the local community.
The blood drive will run from noon to 6 pm Wednesday and Thursday and 8 am to 2 pm Friday. Faler says there are several incentives available to help entice donations including a free t-shirt for all donors, a $10 e-gift card, gift certificates and items from local businesses and all donors will be entered into a special drawing for a trip for two to New York.
