A traffic adjustment is ahead as work nears the end at a west Emporia construction zone.
The city says the Kansas Department of Transportation’s contractor is powering down the temporary traffic signals at Sixth and Prairie no later than 8:30 am Thursday and possibly as soon as 8 am. This means the intersection will be controlled by stop signs, not the stoplights, for up to four hours. The contractor is also powering up the recently-erected new traffic signals as part of ongoing geometric improvements.
Besides the new signal poles, work at Sixth and Prairie has also included improvements to the turning radius at all four corners, as well as improvements to curb and gutter, sidewalks, handicapped-accessible ramps and underground utilities.
Drivers are asked to follow the construction traffic control if they use the intersection, but the city is asking drivers to avoid the intersection if possible.
