Recent heat has put Lyon County crops under stress after an extended period of drought areawide. Livestock are faring relatively well with solid gains, according to Lyon County Extension ag agent Brian Rees on KVOE’s Morning Show this week.
Big concerns, as you can imagine, include access to water and grass conditions after cattle leave a given area. Rees says some producers have had to ship cattle early, whether due to lack of water or grass.
One concern that hasn’t developed — so far — has been blue-green algae. Often in drought, algae will bloom in stock ponds, due to a combination of heat, increased nutrients and lowering water levels. Blue-green algae is harmful or fatal if ingested.
