A brand new school year is just about to start and once again students of USD 253 Emporia will have brand new supplies to begin it.
That’s all thanks to the hard work and generosity of Emporia’s First United Methodist Church by way of its annual school supply drive. According to Kelley Barrett of FUMC, the drive provides supplies to every student in every building across the district.
In addition to helping ensure everyone is prepared for the school year, Barrett says the supply drive also helps to reduce stigma within classrooms.
The annual drive helps to supply more than 4,500 students and is funded largely through the Jones Trust along with private donations from both citizens and church members. Supply packs will be delivered to each school prior to the start of the year with each pack including writing utensils, notebooks, notecards, erasers and other essential classroom items.
The only items not donated by the church are backpacks and boxes of tissues. For more information on the supply drive contact First United Methodist Church by calling 620-342-6186.
