August is a busy month for the United Way of the Flint Hills.
The United Way is getting ready for its United in Purpose Campaign Kickoff and Chamber of Commerce Business Hours After Hours event Aug. 17. On KVOE’s talk of Emporia this week, United Way CEO Mickey Edwards said it’s important that people realize how impactful help can be through the United Way and its community partners, using the work of SparkWheel — formerly known as Communities in Schools — as an example.
The event is at the Gufler Mansion, 612 West 12th, from 5-7 pm. RSVPs are needed.
This week saw the application window opening for the United Way’s United for Racial Equity grants. United Way drive chair Lynn Cunningham says applications don’t have to be professionally handled to be considered.
Grant amounts range from $500 to $2,000. Projects have to fit in the United Way’s mission of “building a vibrant community” through early childhood, youth education, health and economic mobility projects. The application deadline is Sept. 1.
The United Way locally is also getting ready for a trip to Johnson County later this month as Dolly Parton comes to Kansas to celebrate the ongoing expansion of Parton’s Imagination Library. The United Way of the Flint Hills has been involved since 2013, offering children under age 5 a free book every month for parents that sign their children up for the program.
