Every so often, law enforcement agencies find their names are being used by scammers. Such a case is underway in Morris County.
The Sheriff’s Office says at least one person has identified himself as a department employee, demanding immediate payment for unpaid fines or “unsatisfied” warrants — with false allegations of missing jury duty often included. There have been at least six incidents of this scam this week.
The Sheriff’s Office says it never collects fines over the phone. It also says residents should never give out personal information to somebody calling them and residents should never pay somebody over the phone with a gift card or prepaid debit card unless they started the purchase.
Morris County residents who have received a call like this should call the Sheriff’s Office at 620-767-6310.
