If a recommendation from the Emporia Recreation Commission’s Future Funding Task Force finds favor with both the ERC and Emporia City Commission, a new recreation center may be coming to Emporia.
During their recent meeting Monday afternoon, task force members “overwhelmingly came to the conclusion” that the current rec center is inadequate to meet the needs of the local community according to Assistant Director of Rec Operations Amanda Gutierrez. With that in mind, Gutierrez tells KVOE News the task force will be making the recommendation to construct a new facility in a centralized location.
Gutierrez adds that when it comes to a “new facility” adding onto the current Lee Beran Recreation Center is one of many possibilities that could be considered. When it comes to funding the project, Gutierrez says the task force is recommending a combination of sources.
That being said, Gutierrez noted it is unclear what that combination will look like exactly until a location is pinpointed and an exact dollar amount is in hand. The task force will make its recommendation to the ERC during its next regular meeting on Tuesday, August 22 at 5:30 pm.
