Avenue Q, a Tony Award winner in 2004 is a favorite Broadway Show. I came away from Avenue Q with a button that says:
IT SUCKS TO BE ME.
The show is a parody uplifting adult social issues before their time, but the important message for me was about feeling sorry for myself.
Admittedly there are times when I conclude that wearing the
IT SUCKS button seems justified.
Like when my open heart surgery in Cleveland two years ago was successful only to find out my back and compromised left hip were not operable leaving me using a Walker for mobility with the understanding that working hard –i.e., aqua therapy in Topeka twice a week plus daily excises – might keep me out of a wheelchair.
Suddenly losing the sight in my left eye eight years ago wasn’t helpful either.
Fortunately, though, I’m blessed with a strong support group that keeps me grounded.
In addition to great friends I’ve had two good wives, and 3 fantastic sons each with wonderful spouses and they have given us 7 super grandkids. Super Bobbi who doubles as my caregiver provided me with two neat step-daughters, a first son-in-law, and 3 bonus grandkids. Family-wise I have been blessed.
Our travels are limited but I shan’t complain. I’ve visited nearly every state in the USA and more than a dozen foreign countries. I’ve been to the Louvre in Paris, the Vatican, and Monet’s Gardens in France. I played golf on the Old Course in Scotland and attended multiple Master’s Tournaments, I’ve been to the Indy 500, NCAA Final Fours, and two World Series. Family vacations are too many to count and I’ve been blessed with a multitude of outstanding associates in business: everything from savvy competitors to endless great co-workers and partners.
So now I’m 77 years old and somewhat limited in my activities, but thankfully my memory, except for names is pretty good allowing me to keep showing up at KVOE a couple of days a week. Feeling like I’ve fulfilled my leadership duties, so if I attend a civic or church meeting it’s because I’m interested, not obligated.
So, how do I cope with IT SUCKS TO BE ME when it shows up?
Back to Avenue Q where a young man sings “I’m unemployed and turning 33, IT SUCKS TO BE ME!!
Soon he’s joined on the stage by members of the large cast – each and everyone with their own – personal version of – IT SUCKS TO BE ME!
Get the picture?
We each have our burdens to carry and if we let them – they will take us down. Most important is I have a million great memories and even better prospects if I give them a chance. My life definitely does not suck.
I’m Steve Sauder and there are Some things to Think About.
