The Lyon County Attorney’s Office says it cannot divulge whether it is moving forward with criminal charges against students who allegedly made false reports of inappropriate touching at the Emporia Middle School dance earlier this year.
A news release from the County Attorney’s Office says Emporia Police investigators proposed misdemeanor charges of falsely reporting a crime after their investigation concluded. The County Attorney’s Office also says juveniles must be offered what are called Immediate Intervention Programs for first-time offenders before formal charges are filed. If juveniles successfully complete IIPs, charges are not filed.
The County Attorney’s Office also says it cannot release any additional information due to state law.
No reports connected to possible formal charges against an adult went from Emporia Police to the County Attorney’s Office.
Thursday’s announcement essentially ends a case that unfolded rapidly May 12, where reports of inappropriate touching came to light — allegedly by an adult against several juveniles. Emporia Police put over 10 officers and detectives on the investigation before changing the focus from an adult to four unnamed juveniles.
