Moderate to heavy rainfall early Wednesday came too late to have any positive impact on the area’s current drought.
In fact, much of the KVOE listening area had deepening drought over the past week.
The US Drought Monitor map from Thursday morning now demonstrates severe drought for most of Lyon County, aside from a pocket of abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions in northeast Lyon County and extreme drought in the southeast corner of the county. Severe drought has expanded north across most of Morris County, while extreme drought pushed east and now covers most of Chase County.
Exceptional drought, the worst level on the US Drought Monitor scale, remains just south of the KVOE listening area in southwest Greenwood County.
Wednesday’s rainfall may not have helped the Drought Monitor’s weekly update, but it provided some relief to the area. Residents enjoyed anywhere from 0.50-3.2 inches of rain from storms early Wednesday.
More rain is possible Sunday. The Drought Monitor data collection deadline is on Tuesday.
