The totals are in and the 2023 Battle of the Badges blood drive has exceeded its collection goal.
The three-day event brought in a total of 199 units, nine units above the goal of 190. This brought a smile to the face of American Red Cross spokesperson Susan Faler who applauded the Emporia community for once again rising to the challenge.
Faler adds the need for blood continues to be significant and with units only having a 40-plus day shelf life, she encourages residents to get out and donate as much as they can, especially during the summer months when donations are traditionally lower than any other time of the year.
Along with Faler, local law enforcement had plenty of reason to celebrate following the event’s conclusion Friday as they were once again the winners of the Battle of the Badges traveling trophy for favorite agency. Law enforcement came out on top of a close race receiving 59 votes from donors just three more than Emporia Fire and EMS and nine more than Lyon County Emergency Communications.
Emporia Police Captain Ray Mattas says in addition to the votes from the community, he is thankful for the additional visibility the blood drive provides to all local first responders.
If you were unable to attend Battle of the Badges this week, but would still like to donate to the American Red Cross you can find upcoming blood drives and schedule appointments online at RedCrossBlood.org.
