Classes are starting on time at Madison High School after storm-related roof damage atop the school’s main gymnasium earlier this month, but there are some adjustments coming.
USD 386 Madison-Virgil Superintendent Tammy Baird had details on KVOE’s Morning Show on Tuesday:
Storm winds peeled the west half of the roof off the existing roof and folded it on top of itself Aug. 5. Baird says emergency repairs filled all the roof leaks, so that has not been an issue even with storms earlier this week. She also says the gas leak in the gym, which was a major concern during and immediately after the Aug. 5 storm activity, was handled quickly by Kansas Gas without additional issues.
The goal is to remove and replace the metal roof with another metal covering. Baird says it may take three to six months to replace the roof once bids are approved by the USD 386 Board of Education, meaning all indoor sports typically held in the main gym will move to the secondary gym until the roof replacement project is finished. Classes begin Wednesday, and Baird did not mention any other operations adjustments during Tuesday’s interview.
On a brighter note, the district’s long-desired agriculture education building is almost ready for above-ground construction with the pad poured recently. Baird hopes to have the building available for use by second semester in January.
