An Olathe man was arrested following a vehicle pursuit involving local authorities and the Kansas Highway Patrol Friday evening.
According to Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope, the pursuit began on Interstate 35 near Lebo around 8 pm involving Coffey County authorities. The Kansas Highway Patrol soon became involved as the suspect vehicle moved into Lyon County and later Emporia.
The driver, 22-year-old Joao Pedro Ferreira-Amaral crashed into a ditch in the 300 block of Carter around 8:15 pm. He then allegedly fled the vehicle and took refuge in an abandoned trailer leading to a roughly 30-minute search involving Emporia Police, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies and the KHP.
Cope says Ferreira-Amaral then made contact with authorities and willingly surrendered. He was arrested on suspicion of charges including flee and elude and interference with law enforcement.
Formal charges are currently pending.

The driver, whose name has not been released, crashed into a ditch in the 300 block of Carter around 8:15 pm. The driver fled the vehicle and led to a roughly 30 minute search involving Emporia Police, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies and the KHP.
The suspect took refuge in an abandoned trailer in the area, made contact authorities and willing surrendered. No injuries were reported and additional details are currently pending.
