Local law enforcement is reminding local drivers that if you drink and drive, you’ll lose every time.
The annual You Drink. You Drive. You Lose traffic enforcement campaign will begin Saturday and continue through September 4. During this time, law enforcement will be cracking down on impaired drivers traveling local roadways.
In a recent news release, Lyon County Deputy Jody Meyers notes that while impaired driving is illegal, it does not stop at least one person from being killed in a drunk driving accident every 52 minutes nationwide. Meyers adds that if you are impaired behind the wheel you are more likely to crash causing serious injury to yourself, your passengers and other motorists.
If you are planning to attend an event where you will be consuming alcohol, law enforcement encourages you to reduce the chances of getting behind the wheel by having a designated driver or by utilizing public transportation or ride-share services. Now, while you may take steps to ensure you do not drink and drive, not everyone will do so.
As such, Meyers says residents should always buckle up when they get inside of a vehicle as it is their “best defense against impaired drivers.”
In addition to endangering the lives of others, impaired driving can have various financial impacts, loss of driving privileges or even jail time for those who get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
