Due to a combination of factors, many Chase County residents are being urged to cut back on their water use.
Public Wholesale Water District 26 has enacted a water warning effective this past Friday, citing persistent drought, lengthy periods of heat including this upcoming week and electronic equipment failure for wells — in part because of the April tornadic activity and in part because of prior large water leaks.
District 26 includes Cottonwood Falls, Strong City and Chase County Rural Water District 1. For residents served by District 26, the following steps are now in effect until further notice as part of Chase County’s Water Conservation Plan:
*There is an odd/even lawn watering system based on street addresses.
*Outdoor water use is restricted to before 10 am or after 9 pm, including lawn watering and car washing. Golf courses have to water tees and greens only after sunset, while swimming pool refills will be limited to one day a week after sunset.
*Excess water use charges, meaning use of water over the amount used during winter months, are now under consideration.
*Any waste of water will be prohibited.
District water supplies will be monitored daily. Leaks must be repaired within 24 hours of detection.
