Due to high temperatures in the forecast all week, the following schedule adjustments have been reported:
High Schools
*USD 417 Morris County has announced no classes for Friday due to the expected heat. Early-morning sports and activity practices will be optional.
*Emporia High athletics practices will be held mornings or indoors all week. Football Jamboree is at 7:30 pm Friday at Wichita Heights. Junior varsity girls-only tennis meet set for Thursday in Emporia rescheduled to Monday. High school boys soccer against Shawnee Heights to start at 8 pm Friday. Junior varsity soccer canceled.
*USD 251 North Lyon County Northern Heights Football Jamboree at Olpe moved to 8 pm Friday start. Middle school cross country is practicing in the mornings the rest of this week. District has coolers of water and cooling towels on buses for students that need them.
*USD 252 Southern Lyon County has coolers of water and cooling towels on buses for students that need them.
*USD 243 Lebo Football Jamboree at Oswego now at 7:30 pm Friday.
*USD 244 Burlington Football Jamboree at Parsons now at 7:30 pm Friday.
*USD 284 Chase County Football Jamboree at Canton-Galva moved to 10 am Saturday. High school volleyball non-tournament team practicing at 6:15 am Friday; tournament team to practice after school.
*USD 330 Mission Valley high school cross country practice at 7 am all week. Junior high volleyball will practice from 3:45-5:30 pm all week.
*USD 386 Madison-Virgil Football Jamboree at 7:30 pm at Oswego.
*USD 389 Eureka’s Football Jamboree now to start at 8 pm. Junior varsity girls-only golf meet at Uniontown has been postponed until Monday.
*USD 420 Osage City Football Jamboree at Olpe now at 8 pm Friday.
*USD 434 Santa Fe Trail Football Jamboree on Friday canceled.
*USD 454 Burlingame’s Night Lights event Friday canceled. Football Jamboree in Herington now at 8 pm Friday.
*USD 456 Marais des Cygnes Valley has high school football and volleyball and junior high volleyball practicing from 6-7:30 am through Friday. Junior high football will have light activity after school with “significant” precautions. A shuttle leave from Quenemo at 5:30 am for student-athletes. The district’s Meet the Trojans event Thursday and High School Football Jamboree in Hartford on Friday are both canceled.
Area Sports
*All Emporia Recreation Commission practices this week, including those for tackle football, have been canceled.
Community Events
*Emporia Farmer’s Market Wednesday August 23 concert moved to inside of the Emporia Granada Theatre.
Emporia Cooling Centers
*Emporia Police Department lobby, 518 Mechanic. Pets welcome if controlled by owners.
*Bloom House Youth Services, 301 West 11th. teenagers must be present for family members to use the shelter.
*Messiah Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 1101 Neosho. Open 9 am-5 pm Monday-Friday. Pets are allowed if they can be controlled.
*Raise Your Paws, 312 Commercial. Hours are Monday-Friday 8 am-noon and 1-5 pm. “Friendly, leashed dogs” welcome. Water bottles, water and treats for dogs available.
Lyon County Cooling Centers
*Lyon County Sheriff’s Office lobby, 425 Mechanic. Pets welcome if controlled by owners.
Area Cooling Centers
*Cottonwood Falls: Flint Hills Community Church, 1998 Kansas Highway 177. Hours are 9 am to 5 pm Monday-Friday.
City Operations-Emporia
*Residential and commercial sanitation pickup beginning at 5 am Thursday and Friday.
