Now five of the six defendants in the Jesus Avila murder case are either awaiting sentencing or have been sentenced after hearings Monday in Lyon County District Court.
Hearings were held separately for Jovan Pecina, Andrew Granado and Alan Alanis. Pecina and Granado pleaded no contest to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. Alanis announced pleas of guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and arson, coupled with a no-contest plea for aggravated robbery.
Sentencing dates were set for all three before hearings concluded. Pecina will return to court Oct. 5, with Granado in court Oct. 6 and Alanis returning to court Nov. 13.
Monday’s hearings follow a plea deal and related sentencing of Samuel Garcia to over 50 years in prison on counts of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. They also follow a nearly four-year sentence currently underway for Armando Nunez on charges of attempted burglary of a vehicle, interference with law enforcement and criminal damage.
The sixth defendant in the case, Jordy Cornejo-Campoverde, has a status hearing at 4:30 pm Tuesday. He remains charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, arson and other counts.
Avila was shot to death in September 2017.
