Contrary to popular belief, the risks that come with oppressive heat for humans are the same for pets.
That’s according to East Emporia Vet Clinic Veterinarian Dr. Haley Delong who spoke with KVOE News Monday amidst the ongoing record setting heat wave impacting the local listening area.
Delong says to help keep your pets cool during the current heat wave first and foremost owners should make sure their pets always have fresh cool water and limit indoor pets exposure to the outside elements as much as possible. For outdoor pets, owners need to make sure they have plenty of shade and airflow.
Also, Delong notes owners need to pay attention to ground temperatures as much as air temps when out walking their dogs especially if you live in a mostly concrete setting.
Delong also encourages regular upkeep on pet’s fur as away to help keep them cooler as the air gets hotter.
Delong’s comments follow a three day period of record heat in excess above 100 degrees and heat indexes ranging from 100 to 112. An execessive heat warning remains in effect for the entire listening area through Thursday evening.
If you have further questions about how to help protect your animals from the heat, contact your local veterinarian.
