5:30 am Tuesday: Near-record highs expected Tuesday
Sultry conditions continue across the KVOE listening area Tuesday — and for the rest of the work week.
Emporia’s projected high temperature is 104, which would fall just short of the current high of 105 set in 2000. Heat index readings could be anywhere from 105-120 across the eastern half of Kansas by late afternoon.
Monday’s heat caused the city of Emporia to pause its commercial sanitation pickup routes at 1:30 pm Monday. Those routes resumed at 6 am Tuesday.
After several school districts announced adjustments for athletics practices this past weekend, another district announced schedule changes Monday:
*USD 284 Chase County has football practice at 6 am Tuesday and Wednesday. The schedule for the rest of the week is to be determined. Tuesday’s football practice for students in grades 4-6 has been canceled.
Monday’s high of 108 broke Emporia’s prior record of 106 set in 2003, the third straight day of record heat for the Municipal Airport. Heat index readings peaked at 115 degrees.
Eureka’ Milliken Airport got to 109 air temperature and 115 for that heat index. The high broke the old record of 105 set back in 1936.
Temperatures will remain at or above 100 through at least Friday. Peak heat indices may be anywhere from 105-115 through at least Thursday. Temperatures in the low 90s are expected Saturday, with highs in the upper 80s Sunday along with a slight chance of showers and storms.
