Come Monday, court proceedings against Jordy Cornejo-Campoverde may result in a plea or trial dates.
During a review hearing in Lyon County District Court on Tuesday, defense attorney Rick Meier said plea negotiations had broken down, opening up the prospect of a jury trial. Judge Lee Fowler set a new review hearing for 1:30 pm Monday to see whether a plea agreement is reached, and trial dates could well be set then if an agreement can’t be finalized.
Cornejo-Campoverde is one of six defendants in the Jesus Avila murder that happened in September 2017, and he’s the only defendant who hasn’t been sentenced or is set for sentencing. He’s still charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, arson and other counts.
Earlier this month, Samuel Garcia was sentenced to over 50 years in prison on counts of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. Last year, Armando Nunez began serving a nearly four-sentence for attempted burglary of a vehicle, interference with law enforcement and criminal damage. On Monday, Jovan Pecina and Andrew Granado pleaded no contest to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and aggravated robbery, while Alan Alanis announced pleas of guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and arson. He also pleaded no contest to aggravated robbery.
