For the first time since the current heat wave began Saturday, neither Emporia nor Eureka got into record heat territory.
Emporia’s high temperature got to 105, just short of the daily record dating to 2011. Eureka got to 101, below the prior record of 109 back in 1936. Heat index readings climbed to 108 at both airports.
Highs are expected to be 104 in Emporia and 103 in Eureka on Thursday.
The end is, thankfully, in sight for the current heat wave. After highs of 103 Friday, temperatures will be in the low to mid-90s Saturday. Slight chances of storm activity Saturday into Sunday will herald high temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees for much of next week.
