A defendant in the Jesus Avila murder case has a hearing Monday afternoon.
Jordy Cornejo-Campoverde appears before Judge Lee Fowler at 1:30 pm, and the status conference will determine whether there is a plea, trial or more time needed for a resolution. Last week, defense attorney Rick Meier said plea negotiations had broken down, opening up the prospect of a jury trial.
Cornejo-Campoverde is one of six defendants in the Jesus Avila murder that happened in September 2017, and he’s the only defendant who hasn’t been sentenced or is set for sentencing. He’s still charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, arson and other counts.
Earlier this month, Samuel Garcia was sentenced to over 50 years in prison on counts of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. Last year, Armando Nunez began serving a nearly four-sentence for attempted burglary of a vehicle, interference with law enforcement and criminal damage. On Monday, Jovan Pecina and Andrew Granado pleaded no contest to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and aggravated robbery, while Alan Alanis announced pleas of guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and arson. He also pleaded no contest to aggravated robbery.
