After the best season in program history that saw it place second in Class 5A and winning the program’s first Centennial League championship, the Emporia High girls golf team will look different heading into the new season.
The Lady Spartans lost their two top golfers Olivia and Avary Eckert, both of whom are continuing their golf careers collegiately.
Even with losing Olivia and Avary Eckert, Coach Rick Eckert says there won’t be much drop-off in the program.
Sophomore Elise Eckert was the Lady Spartans’ No. 3 golfer behind her two sisters and will slide into the No. 1 spot. Eckert says this summer has been beneficial for her. Eckert finished fifth in the 13-15 girls division on the Kansas Junior Golf Tour.
Behind Elise Eckert, Ella Fessler will be a key contributor. Coach Eckert says Fessler’s contribution in 2022 was huge when the Lady Spartans qualified for state and were the runners-up in Class 5A.
Emporia High opens its season at 1 p.m. Tuesday with its home invitational at Emporia Golf Course. The Lady Spartans will also host the Centennial League Tournament in September.
