The fifth annual No Coast Film Festival closed down Sunday, and those involved say it was a rousing event.
Dylan Gary won The Kraken Award for his film, “The Uniform,” which follows a woman frustrated by life and begins wearing a police uniform as a way to get people to pay attention. Gary says he was impressed with the No Coast experience.
Lee Rex put his unique spin on the James Bond series with “Bonding,” which he says combines the spy thriller and “X-Files” genres.
Alex Astrella brought his film “Unbreakable” — the story of a a family friend who overcomes polio to become an orthopedic surgeon. Astrella says it was humbling experience to craft the film.
Much of the film industry pays attention to feature-length films, but No Coast administrator Jonny Leach tells KVOE News there’s a readiness to enjoy short films — as No Coast has highlighted for five years.
No Coast brought over 70 films and nearly 30 directors from around the world to Emporia. “Witchfairy,” directed by Cedric Igodt and David Van de Weyer, won the Grand Jury Prize. “Don Johnson is Not Your Man,” directed by Kathryn Lunte, won for Best Student Film. “The Hope Chest Has a Secret Drawer,” directed by Laura Frenzer, earned the Audience Choice award.
Submissions are already open for No Coast 6, which will be Aug. 23-25 next year.
Meanwhile, No Coast will have a presence at the Halfway to Everywhere Music and Arts Festival this upcoming weekend with a special music video festival Saturday at 627 Event Space.
