Community Corrections will be searching for a new leader in the coming weeks.
Full details as to what the search will look like is currently pending, however, it comes after current Director Steve Willis offered his formal resignation Thursday morning to Lyon County Commissioners. Willis will be leaving Community Corrections to take a role with a non-profit in Topeka where he will work closely with the state legislature to develop policies to assist families and children in need across the state of Kansas.
Of the decision, Willis says it was both difficult and as “surprising” to him as it likely was to others, but his new role will allow him to continue making a positive impact for others on a much larger scale.
Willis adds that he is grateful for his time in Emporia and with Community Corrections.
Willis has led Community Corrections since March of 2016. During his tenure, Community Corrections has developed and implemented several initiatives including the Spartan Explorers program, a partnership between the agency and USD 253 Emporia which provides youth in the court system opportunities for personal growth through community service endeavors. Willis’ final day will be October 4.
