What began as a group meant to help individuals practice a second language has evolved into Emporia’s newest non-profit organization.
During a recent appearance on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, Emporia Spanish Speakers Director Lelan Dains announced the organization was recently informed that it has received 501 c 3 status from the Internal Revenue Service. Dains says the status was made official back in May, however, he was only informed two weeks ago.
With the new status, Dains says nothing will change program-wise for the organization, but it will open new avenues for funding to help support that programming.
Dains began Emporia Spanish Speakers back in 2016 as a way to give local residents a place to engage and grow their knowledge of the Spanish language. He tells KVOE the 501 c3 status brings with it a sense of validation.
The good news did not stop there, however, as Dains also announced the organization was selected as one of six national programs for the 2023 Bridge-Building Innovation Showcase which illustrates how organizations are navigating polarizing climates and differences to foster meaningful change within their communities. The showcase includes both an in-person event in Kansas City on October 14 and a virtual webinar on October 19.
The announcement follows Emporia Spanish Speakers’ selection as one of 10 organizations to participate in the Welcoming America Rural Welcoming Initiative near the start of the year. For more information on Emporia Spanish Speakers, visit EmporiaSpanishSpeakers.com or find them on Facebook.
