Scattered rain showers could not wash away the sense of patriotism of several local residents on the anniversary of one of the greatest tragedies in American History Monday.
Residents from all across the area stood atop the Exit 160 overpass on Interstate 35 from sun up to sun down for the annual Random Acts of Patriotism event. Along with the individuals on the overpass were more than 60 American flags flying in support of the thousands of lives lost in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
Organizer John Kitt spoke with KVOE News during the event saying this event will continue for as long as possible as it is important Americans never forget the significance of that date.
He they plan to continue putting on the event for as long as possible as it is a people’s responsibility to ensure the history of their nation, the good and the bad, lives on long after we are gone.
Kitt adds that while the American flags send a strong message, the real symbolism of the event lies within the residents who come together each year to support the event. He says the way so many individuals come together is truly reminiscent of the selflessness demonstrated by first responders and civilians alike back in 2001.
Random Acts of Patriotism began back in 2002 one year to the date after nearly 3,000 people lost their lives following the hijacking of planes which were crashed into both the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and a field outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
